Kathryn created this unique necklace that has been refashioned fromtwo separate vintage gold necklaces. The pendant is a gold “doubloon” found ina box of antique jewelry and a small crystal from an antique chandelierreminiscent of a pirate’s treasure. The necklace measures 18 inches long andthe pendant measures 1 ¼ inches. Add a touch of flash and whimsy to your nextoutfit!

Julie Colby of Inviting Play created this 12" Waldorf Baby Doll. It was handmade by Julie by usingtraditional methods and all natural materials. The features of her dolls arekept simple and neutral. All of Julie's dolls are stuffed with Minnesota wool andmade with natural fibers such as cotton, wool, mohair, and alpaca. Each doll iscompletely unique and one of a kind. This very sweet baby has bent baby shapedlimbs, a belly button, a cotton velour diaper, wool felt slippers, a cottonlinen dress with beautiful cotton Swedish trim, a soft cloud of blue mohair forhair that can be gently brushed and finger styled, and a velour hat. All of thedoll's clothes come off and are constructed with children in mind so that thedoll can be dressed easily. This is the perfect sized baby for 1 - 5 year oldchildren. Children under three should be supervised as needed because mohairsheds and is not good to eat.

Getting to Know You: A Handmade Princess

This is a chance to get to know some of the members of HandmadeMN and a little bit more about what they make and do in their own words.

Today we are getting to know Gilda from A Handmade Princess who lives in Minneapolis.

What do you make and why? I knit. And knit and knit and knit. Anytime an idea pops up in my head, I get on it. I make purses, cowls, hats, mitts, baby clothes, baby gift sets, and sometimes I mix knitting with sewing to create cute hippy tanks & dresses.

Where do you do your making? With knitting, I can carry it along with me so I can keep my hands busy anywhere; in the doctor’s office, at school functions, in the movie theater, and the list goes on.

What is your favorite part of the process or a favorite technique? Buying the yarn. No, seriously. It is so exciting to buy this ball of material and know that it will turn into something awesome that I made with my own two hands. Best feeling ever. Deciding on the actual material is the hardest. Shall I work with wool, alpaca, silk, or cotton with this project? I think alpaca is my favorite to work with - it is soooo soft (but expensive)! Guilty: I am a yarn hoarder.

This is really lazy of me, but I love lace work the best, because it seems to go the fastest. My second favorite is color work, because you can come up with literally any design you want and incorporate it into your knitting. So, really, two fancy skills thrown into one project.

Tell us something else we don't know. I’m in a knitting group. We meet every week (mostly) at a local coffee shop or cafe and knit and chat. Knitting is so collaborative. Have you checked out Ravelry? (www.ravelry.com) (I’m Gilda Knits on there if you want to be my friend) I design & sell my own patterns now.

This is a chance to get to know some of the members of HandmadeMN and a little bit more about what they make and do in their own words.

Today we are getting to know Mara Olden from Dragonfly Adornments who lives in Coon Rapids.

What do you make and why? I make jewelry with natural gemstones. I think natural things are most beautiful. I fuse glass because I am fascinated by anything that is glass. I started creating my own pieces because I wanted to make my own beads and accessories.

Where do you do your making? I have a studio in my home. It is very small and I can only work on one type of project at a time.

What is your favorite part of the process or a favorite tool? My favorite tool is my kiln.

What do you listen to or watch while you are working? I have a television in my studio. I love listening to talk shows. I also enjoy listening to Click and Clack from Car Talk Radio.

Tell us something else we don't know. I dream about mining for gems.

Getting to Know You: Amve Jewelry

This is a chance to get to know some of the members of HandmadeMN and a little bit more about what they make and do in their own words.

Today we are getting to know Andrea Marit Erickson from Amve Jewelry who lives in Burnsville.

What do you make and why? I make jewelry and rosaries. It all started six years ago as a hobby which developed into a business after my first craft sale. It was a successful sale and it occurred to me that I could sell my items on Etsy. This year I learned to make rosaries and have added those to my site too.

Where do you do your making? My temporary workspace or office, as I like to call it, is the dining room table. I need to clear it off for thanksgiving dinner, but it took days to arrange my space just right and it’ll take days to dismantle it all! Someday I’ll get my own office- a proper office, but for right now the dining room table will do.

What is your favorite part of the process or a favorite tool? My favorite part of the process is choosing my beads. I love going to my favorite bead stores and letting the beads “inspire me”. So many pretty colors, shapes and textures! I love them all! My favorite materials are Dichroic glass, freshwater pearl and lampwork beads. They all inspire me to create my jewelry and rosaries. My second favorite part is when I complete a project and find that it has turned out perfectly.

What do you listen to or watch while you are working? I listen to Gregorian chant (chanted prayers in Latin) when I make rosaries. Sometimes I listen to classical music. I find it soothing to listen to music like that when I am working.

Tell us something else we don't know. I love to collect coins. Every time I get a new coin from a cashier at a store or the bank or where ever: I always check to see if it’s a new quarter. In addition to collecting the new quarters, I’ve collected coins from every country I’ve visited: France, Spain, Italy, and Portugal.

Nestled in the Linden Hills neighborhood in Southwest Minneapolis is the Linden Tree. Just a year old, the shop is filled with handmade goods by over 60 local artists, many who are HandmadeMN artists, including me. Owner Melissa Pederson saw a need in her neighborhood for a fun, creative place to shop and a place for local artists to sell their work. She provides an opportunity for new artists to experience the confidence boost of finding buyers who value their work. Kids and teens (ages 7 to 19) can apply to be Junior Artists in Residence. Half of the sale of each of their items goes to the Junior Artist and the other 50% goes to the charity of their choice. The Linden Tree is a place for new and experienced artists to network together. Customers get a chance to meet the artists at Trunk Shows or by chance if they are dropping off new items. Melissa always makes a point to introduce them to customers in the store.
The Linden Tree is a warm and friendly shop to find unique handmade items from head (adorable hats) to toe (equally adorable slippers). There are beautifully sewn clothes, aprons, totes, handcrafted jewelry, doll clothes, hair accessories and holiday items. For your home you can find glass art, framed art in several medias, table linens, wood crafted items as well as candles, cards and soaps. Shoppers can purchase these unique gifts as well as become inspired to create their own items. That is accomplished by the sewing classes they offer. Melissa, in addition to being the shop owner, describes herself as a weekend seamstress and clothing designer. Half of her shop is devoted to specialty designer fabrics that inspire people and their children to sew to learn to sew. Even Mayor Rybak took a sewing lesson!

Getting to Know You: Passion to Create

This is a chance to get to know some of the members of HandmadeMN and a little bit more about what they make and do in their own words.

Today we are getting to know BarbAnn Pappas of Passion to Create who blogs at passiontocreate and lives in the Minneapolis area.

What do you make and why? Currently I am making Shawl/Hair sticks out of gemstones and fallen carved wood. I am a big knitter and I just couldn't find nice shawl sticks to compliment my hand knit garments – “Sticks and Stones” were born. When I showed them to friends, they loved them and encouraged me to make more and sell them.

Where do you do your making? I am so lucky to have a studio in my home, since I work in many mediums and I dabble in lots of things; I need lots of storage and a work space that can be left undisturbed until I return. The walls of my studio are lime green and they make me smile when I walk in the room. I have attached a picture when it is neat and tidy – not often.

What is your favorite part of the process? I just love making something from raw materials. I enjoy the creative process and get energized by it. I like to see where the process will take me. I am often stunned to realize that I could do it. I love fibers, beads, paper, wood, metal, and clay to name a few; and I use multiple materials at the same time.

What do you listen to or watch while you are working? I am a voracious audio book listener. I listen to fiction and mainly historical fiction. I loved the Outlander series, but also crime mysteries like the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy.

Tell us something else that we don't know about you. I am an educational administrator in my “real life” but I will be retiring in June 2012 and I can’t wait to unleash the pent up creativity! I currently am working in fiber and beads, but I have done decorative painting, I love to spin, and weave and I make dolls.

Mara created this glass pendant by layering black glass, dichroic glass and a clear blue glass over the piece. She fused the pendant in her kiln at about 1400 degrees for several hours. The blue glass highlights the beautiful dichroic glass. Mara used dichroic glass with shades of cobalt blue, aqua, as well as, hints of green. She has attached a large bail so you can use just about any necklace with it.

Christie created this artistic pendant as an homage to the famous Minneapolis icon Spoonbridge and Cherry at the Walker Art Center, this necklace will show your love of Minneapolis. Laser cut into 1/8” solid walnut, the cutout is a nice contrast with the fine details in this original design.

The pendant is finished with lead-free gunmetal chain and findings, this lightweight necklace measures about approximately 18” inches long and the circle pendant measures 2” wide by 1" high. The necklace also features her signature heart dangle in the back, which can be used to extend the necklace length if desired.

Getting to Know You: Bodice Goddess

This is a chance to get to know some of the members of HandmadeMN and a little bit more about what they make and do in their own words.

Today we are getting to know Maggie Schultz from Bodice Goddess who lives in Saint Paul (you can also find out about her work at bymaggie.com).

What do you make and why? I make a lot of different things, but primarily it's costumes, clothing, and crochet. I costumed in high school, and that's when I realized that dressing up is FUN! So when I have the chance, I create costumes. I then realized that I could take everything I was learning from costuming and try making my own clothes. I spent all of 2010 not buying anything new, and instead only bought second hand items and altered clothing to fit or made something new.

I've gotten really drawn to crochet lately as well - there's something very zen about the patterns you can create with yarn. Also, crochet is portable, and I can work patterns with my mom and sister. I've also been trying my hand at making other things, too, like hair fascinators and garters. I made a pair of garters for my sister's wedding last summer - that was fun.

Where do you do your making?

It depends on the project. I can crochet pretty much anywhere. In fact, I worked my first team challenge for HandmadeMN next to a bonfire. Sewing, though, is trickier. Currently, I have a studio corner carved out of the "dining room" area of my apartment. There wasn't enough space for a dining room table, but there's plenty room for my airlift table once I took the extra 3-foot wing off of it. I like having my sewing stuff in a common room so I have access to a TV and a couch - that way, if I take a break, it's still there, guilting me into coming back to work.

I'm moving to a new place in September, and it'll be interesting to see how I work that space to suit what I need.

What is your favorite part of the process? That's a complicated question. My favorite part of the process is seeing it DONE, and liking it. After that, there's a disconnect usually. Like the project isn't mine anymore, and it's off to live a life all its own. I feel a little bit like an eagle's nest. The babies leave and go off on their own, and I'm still here, getting stronger every year with every brood.

What do you listen to or watch while you are working?

I've got a little bit of (self-diagnosed) ADD, so I have to have something else going on practically at all times that I can ignore in order to focus. (For example, [at the time of writing], I've got the audio for an episode of "Boy Meets World" playing. :D) When I'm working on a project, I am a sucker for marathons. I crocheted a blanket for my boss's firstborn to a "Pirates of the Caribbean" marathon, and made a Joker suit to my "How I Met Your Mother" DVDs. OnDemand is my friend for that, too.

Tell us something else that we don't know about you. I'd rather make a custom item for someone than anything else in the world. I like nothing more than taking a little kernel of an idea from someone, running with it, and bringing it back, completed and perfect. I've made corsets, messenger bags, and crocheted items with this in mind.

My current favorite is the Fiery from Labyrinth that I made for a coworker's baby shower because we used to sing "Dance Magic Dance" to each other at the office (and because I had orange and red fun yarn on hand). The Fieries are the guys that sing the only non-Bowie song in the entire film, and take off their heads and throw them at each other. I thought it was an adorable idea for a matched toy-and-blankie set for the little ovenbun, so I got to work. I didn't use a pattern at all for the Fiery, and made him up as I worked. His head is detachable using strings of yarn to stay CPSIA-friendly. The blankie is based on a pattern from an afghan book and worked incredibly quickly. Here's the blog post I wrote about him.

Of course, I'm not exempt from the "wanting a custom item" bug. In May, I made a red carpet gown for a movie premiere. The whole story's here.

More Goodies for the Handmade Fall Market Giveaway Baskets and Swag Bags

Today I have a few more items to show you that will be in our 2 Giveaway Baskets and 25 Swag Bags at the HandmadeMN Fall Market on October 22 at the Ballentine VFW in Minneapolis. Winners for the Giveaway Baskets will be drawn from the completed Passports and the Swag Bags will be handed out to the first 25 shoppers.

Creighton of Woodchuckswood engages in the art form of carving and woodturning. He creates these beautiful items through the "continuous creation of negative space." Who wouldn't want one of these bowls, vases, bottle stoppers, or candle holder for their home?

Amy of CayennePeppy designs her jewelry, selects the materials, and then enjoys watching the final product materialize as she works in her home studio.

Luann of LuannDanzlDesigns certainly has captured the colors of a vibrant Minnesota fall in this pumpkin and this flower!

This cute coin purse features a blue spirals on cotton print with a zipper charm and carabiner clip. This little cotton purse is a little bigger than a coin purse, at 4 inches (10cm) tall and wide and about 1.5 inches (4cm) thick across the bottom, and will hold an assortment of small things like cash, credit cards, lip balm, a small cell phone. Keys may be placed inside it or attached to the carabiner clip. It’s a passion working with seed beads, using a needle and thread to create something wonderful, one bead at a time. There are no actual patterns, it all happens rather organically and color drives the whole process. Harmony is something that pleases the eye. The bracelet engages you and creates an inner sense of balance and order with your visual experience. This bracelet is 3/4” wide at the widest point and 7 1/2” long. It will best fit wrists between 6 1/4 ” to 7 1/4”. I use double thread when stitching together these bracelets to reinforce its construction.

HandmadeMN is excited to announce that we have scheduled our HandmadeFall Market on October 22 at the Ballentine VFW (2916 Lyndale Ave S) in Minneapolis from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm.

Our Gift Baskets and Swag Bags will be back too!!

Two, yes 2, lucky visitors will be the recipients of our Gift Baskets! These contain many handmade products that have been generously donated by our HandmadeMN members and will be worth about $150 each. To qualify, all you need to do is to have your HandmadeMN Passport stamped by 3 vendors upstairs and 3 vendors downstairs - no purchase necessary. Although I highly suspect you won't be able to avoid the temptation to buy something at the market!

Additionally, the first 25 visitors to the market will receive Swag Bags that will be filled with even more handmade product from our HandmadeMN members! At our last market, we had shoppers lined up at both the front door and the back door well before opening in hopes of snagging one. People were absolutely ecstatic about the contents!

So, what might you find in your Gift Basket or your Swag Bag? Here are some possibilities as the donations from our team members are already rolling in!

Cindy Lindgren has donated boxed card sets and individual cards for the baskets and swag bags. Wouldn't you love to have a set of these for the upcoming holidays?

This week Adrienne of Ariel Simone is giving away this fabulous Peasant Sleeved Dress with Zipper Detail and Pockets.

Peasant Sleeved Dress with Zipper Detail, and Pockets: This provincial inspired dress is a nice addition to any wardrobe. The generous sleeves look great with the gathered skirt. The fabric in this dress gives a comfortable, rustic feel. The zipper details around the neckline are an adorable and trendy addition, while the bodice has a wonderfully fitted shape. There are also large pockets hidden in the pleated circle skirt that can hold many items without making the skirt look weighed down.

This smock features a demure neckline with zipper detaining down the front. There is the illusion that the zipper is unzipping the bodice of this dress creating a modern, fresh take on this peasant dud. The zipper actually is stitched in place and the slit dips 6 inches from the collarbone. The wonderful sleeves are fitted to the elbow and billow out through the wrist where they are gathered. The back of this dress dips down to the mid back so you can still wear any bra and the straps won’t show. The pleated circle skirt has pockets and the hem is 3 inches above the knee.
