Etsy Favorite for Fathers Day

Check out these great, one-of-a-kind, walking sticks on Etsy's Bearpawrustics shop--a favorite of Minnesota etsian, starsaponthars's.  I think they would make a great Fathers Day gift for the avid walker, or one who needs a little encouragement!

Bearpawrustic's walking sticks are made in Maine; however, Minnesota has some great trails, many are even in the Twin Cities Metropolitan area.  There are a few books out there that would make a great combination gift with the walking stick.  The two listed below are a couple ideas:
Hiking Minnesota II by Mary Jo Mosher

You can also find maps and distances online that you could print out yourself:

For national maps, Trails.com is a wonderful resource.

Joining a non-competitive Twin Cities' Volksmarch is another great way to get out and walk with others.  In German, "volksmarch" means "a people's" walk.  There are Volkssporting clubs located throughout the U.S.. The American Volkssport Association, founded in 1976,  is a educational non-profit corporation dedicated to promoting non-competitive physical fitness, friendship, and fun through volkssporting events.

Walking sticks have been around for centuries.  Our ancestors did not need a list to tell them what they were good for, but this information I found on www.backpacking.net was interesting to me:
WHY CARRY A WALKING STICK?

IT WILL HELP YOU KEEP YOUR BALANCE
  • Crossing Creeks, Streams, Rivers
  • Traversing Hillsides (and pretending you are in the Alps yodeling!)
  • Crossing Shale, Scree (What is scree?)
  • Carrying Heavy Loads
  • Resting En Route (yes!)

IT WILL HELP YOU MANEUVER

  • Crossing Downed Trees Over Trails
  • To Break or Prevent a Fall

IT WILL REDUCE STRESS ON BACK, KNEES, LEGS, & FEET

  • Provides Extra Power & Balance, Going Uphill (I need that!)
  • Reduces Shock on Knees, Going Downhill (...and that too)
  • Takes Pressure off Back & Hips (mainly uphill) (...)

OTHER USES

  • Center or Side Pole for a Tarp
  • To Prop Up Your Pack
  • To Lean on When Resting (ah...maybe I am the one who needs a little "encouragement"!)
  • Pushing Aside Spider Webs & Brush
  • Self Defense ? (well...as Teddy Roosevelt said, "Walk softly and carry a BIG STICK.")
